Perth’s hopes of revenge in the Grand Final series against the Breakers have been majorly hit by Damian Martin being ruled out due to his Achilles being re-injured in the Semi Final series against Wollongong. Some people are saying this gives the Breakers a guaranteed 3peat. All I can say is, try again guys – WAY too soon to make that call.
Yes, Damian Martin is a defensive genius. Last season, he was the NBL’s top defensive player, and he hasn’t had too shabby a season this year either. What we do need to remember is Cedric Jackson’s ankle last season though. People ruled out the Breakers when that happened. Nek minit, back-to-back.
I have to say, looking at some of the stats of the NZ/Perth history, I was a little surprised. It’s a lot closer than I would have expected. The two teams have played 37 times. Perth have won 20 of those, the Breakers taking the other 17. Here’s the interesting part though – Perth lose in New Zealand a lot more than I realised. 14 of the 20 times Perth and New Zealand have met in Auckland, the Breakers have been victorious.
You need to remember that this is the end. If either side have any energy left after Game 2, they’re doing something wrong. That’s what makes Game 3 of a Grand Final series so good. It’s scrappy. This series could go either way. Obviously, I’d love to see it staying in Auckland, but there’s just as good a chance of this going to Western Australia. It’s not over ’till the fat lady sings and Adele is still warming up.
