We’ve now seen two rounds of NBL Basketball – three games being played by the New Zealand Breakers. We went into the season seeing the Australian media suggesting that the Breakers have no chance of the repeat. The bookies weren’t being too kind either – the TAB giving the Breakers fourth with $9 odds. But after three wins from three games, are they changing their minds?
The bookies have changed their mind. The NZ TAB now has the Breakers as second favourites with NZ$3 (about AU$2.30) odds. The Australian TAB has the Breakers in second too with AU$4.50 (about NZ$5.75) odds. Championship sponsors, Centrebet have the Breakers in second as well with AU$4.00 (NZ$5.12) odds.
In terms of the Australian media, they seem to not be talking about the Breakers’ chances in the championship, but they are at least accepting our performances so far have been impressive. Articles from the Sydney Morning Herald, ninemsn and Sky News have all been relatively positive regarding the Breakers.
The fact is, the Australians need to be more worried about the Breakers than they are. We may have a number of new players in the team, but all of them deserve to be in the championship defence and will, hopefully, be successful.
