I meant to do a post about this ages ago but completely forgot. So, @vodafonenz now gives you free access to Facebook and Twitter if you use supported apps or the mobile site, provided you have a data plan. This is a good start toward mobile carriers in NZ supporting social media users, but it is only that – a start.
Compare this with Optus in Australia. They offer free Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, ebay and Foursquare. And it’s not to customers with a data plan – it’s for all customers. If we’re honest, if Vodafone NZ was to impliment this, it would not make too much difference as NZers don’t use Twitter, LinkedIn etc, and they are generally reluctant to use mobile data.
While I congratulate Vodafone for making the start, it’s about time we got value for money in NZ. And I’m not just talking about mobile providers. If NZ is an economic pricetaker, why are our prices higher than everywhere else?
